Not Loving It: 9/11 Christian Center Near Ground Zero

“I love New York, but I hate the idea of a mosque at Ground Zero.”  Those were (and still are) my sentiments regarding the proposed mosque in lower Manhattan two blocks from the World Trade Center.  After reading today that a Florida pastor, Bill Keller, plans to open what he calls the “9/11 Christian Center” near Ground Zero, I simply need to say, “I love New York, but hate the idea of the 9/11 Christian Center near Ground Zero!” According to the official website for this new “Christian Center” near Ground Zero, initial worship services will be held on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. in a nearby hotel (the NY Marriott on 85th West St. or the Embassy Suites at 102 North End Ave.) starting on Sunday, September 5.  In January 2011, the center and its 7-day-a-week … Read entire article »

Environmental gods & Friends For Change

“We promise to reg(ister) and pledge allegiance to the planet on which we stand.” If it were up to the Disney Channel, kids all across America would be pledging allegiance to planet Earth instead of the flag.  Environmentalism good — patriotism bad.  Last week, while working on my blog, the television was tuned to the Disney Channel (my boys’ doing, not mine).  I don’t normally watch or listen to most commercials, but this one caught my eye.  I stopped typing and watched for just under two minutes as the teenage stars of the Disney Channel’s most popular shows made their pitch to kids (including mine) all across America to “go green.” (watch the full video here) Friends for Change is Disney’s brilliant idea to “help heal the planet” by encouraging everyone, especially children and … Read entire article »

Coming Out: A Grace Response

If your long-time friend announced that he was gay, how would you respond?  If your son or daughter declared their homosexuality, what would you say?  If a co-worker of many years confided in you that he was gay, how would you treat him at work?  In our culture, those questions are certainly not unimaginable.  All over America, on any given day, people are faced with these dilemmas.  And, these circumstances happen to Christians and non-Christians alike.  Just because a person is a follower of Jesus Christ does not automatically exempt them from the very messy and often-times ugly confrontations that result when a close friend or family member reveals their sexual orientation.  How will we choose to respond to gay marriage, gay families, and gay friends? On Wednesday, President Bush’s campaign manager … Read entire article »

Reaching A Verdict: My Day As A Juror

“We, the jury, find the defendant, NOT GUILTY.”  As the foreperson for the jury, I had the responsibility to read the unanimous verdict that my fellow jurors and I had arrived at after deliberating behind closed doors for almost an hour .  The defendant, standing next to his attorney, was obviously relieved and his family began to shed tears of joy.  An ordeal that began for this man five months prior, with his arrest for driving under the influence of drugs, ended when a jury of his peers found him not guilty of the crime for which he had been charged. My involvement in the case really began when I received a jury summons in March, the same month that the defendant was arrested.  Little did either of us know that our paths would cross on … Read entire article »

Dr. Laura, Free Speech & Hypocrisy!

I don’t listen to Dr. Laura Schlessinger anymore.  It’s not that she’s boring.  It’s not that I always disagree with the advice she gives to callers.  Why don’t I listen anymore?  Well, how can I answer that in a nice way?  I stopped listening because I think Dr. Laura comes across as insensitive and condescending to many people who are in distress.  Not that I’m excusing people’s behavior and why they get into the messes they do, but I do not want to waste my time listening to Dr. Laura berate someone to the point of tears.  It’s not productive for me in the least and I’m not sure how productive it is for the callers or for the listeners for that matter. On August 10, during her syndicated radio show, in response to … Read entire article »
