Dallas: A Father-Son Roadtrip
I like Dallas! Some may be asking, “Who couldn’t like Dallas?” For others, the mere mention of this city — home to “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys — may bring to mind a slightly different question, better left unsaid. In my first 44 years of life, I have never had occasion to visit Dallas, which ranks as America’s 9th largest city (although only 3rd biggest in Texas, behind Houston and San Antonio). I don’t count my ever-increasing time (thanks American Airlines) changing planes at Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport as official visits. My father, who was a funeral director for over forty years, lived in Dallas back in the 1950s while attending Gupton-Jones Institute of Mortuary Science. After earning his degree, he returned to his native Florida, never returning to Dallas. Maybe it was the memories of his … Read entire article »
Happy Thanksgiving!
After a wonderful day spent with family and, having eaten too much turkey, mashed potatoes, southern cornbread dressing, and green beans, I retired for an afternoon nap. Well, it wasn’t really a nap, what with three very, very active boys — ages 11, 9, and 5 — in the house, but I did manage to get some rest nonetheless. I came across the following post on The Corner at National Review Online (H/T: Daniel Foster). It is Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation from 1863. Thought you might enjoy reading it as much as I did. Hope you and your family had a blessed and memorable Thanksgiving. God bless! By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation. The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful … Read entire article »

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution In the end, opt out fizzled out. In hindsight, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving — the busiest travel day of the year — was probably not the best day to stage a protest against the federal government’s new, intrusive “security” measures at our nation’s airports. Most folks who are flying today simply want to get from point A to point B as fast as possible without having any more delays than … Read entire article »

Baptist Press: A Case of Curious Headlines
“A good blog headline is often the only factor that determines whether or not an article on your blog will be read. The idea that content is king is true, but some people miss out on reading that great content because there is nothing interesting in the headline that represents it.” (Headline Writing Techniques That Just Work) Don’t I know it! With 89 blog posts and 89 headlines since beginning From Law to Grace in July, I am often painfully aware of the weak and otherwise poor headlines that I have chosen for some of my posts. While I hope that people will read my posts regardless of the headline, the reality is that most will not bother to even read the first paragraph of what I have written unless they are first … Read entire article »
