Gladys Kravitz’s Spirit At FBC Dallas!

When most people are getting into the Christmas spirit, leave it to one of Southern Baptist’s premier mega-churches to keep the spirit of Gladys Kravitz alive and well.  Gladys and her husband, Abner, were the across-the-street neighbors to Darrin and Samantha Stephens on the classic 1960′s sitcom, Bewitched. (For the record, I’ll take Darrin #1, played by the late Dick York.) Poor Gladys — busy-body extraordinaire — was always on the look-out for strange happenings at the Stephens’ home.  Although Gladys Kravitz was a relatively minor fictional character during Bewitched’s eight year run,  her name has become synonymous with a “nosy neighbor or colleague.”  And, that’s not meant as a compliment! During a time in our country where almost 10% of the population is unemployed and many hard-working Americans are just trying to make ends meet … Read entire article »

Belmont: Money Talks, Gays Walk & Chaos Follows

Money talks — people walk!  At Belmont University, whoever’s money talks the loudest may determine the fate of the (now) former women’s soccer coach, Lisa Howe.  Belmont, located near Nashville’s historic “Music Row,” in recent years has distanced itself from its traditional (and some might say, conservative) Baptist roots.  According to an Associated Baptist Press article, “In 2007 Belmont agreed to pay $11 million to settle a lawsuit terminating its 56-year relationship with the Tennessee Baptist Convention, in part to diversify its trustee board and donor database in a day when the majority of students are no longer Baptist.”  In addition to diversifying their trustee board by including non-Baptists, Belmont also distanced itself on certain “moral” issues, including homosexuality: Like many colleges, Belmont’s policies are ambiguous when it comes to hiring gays. Its policy of non-discrimination … Read entire article »

G.W.U. — Radically Redefining Coed

“The campus of George Washington University must be an interesting place to be — and it looks like it may quickly become a lot more interesting.”  Dr. R. Albert Mohler, “Coed Quarters & Free Birth Control–The New Campus Culture?” If past is prologue, then my undergraduate alma mater continues to be every bit as interesting as when I arrived as a freshman on the Foggy Bottom campus in the late summer of 1984.  Although school officials — operating out of Rice Hall, named for the Baptist pastor who founded Columbian College, now known as the George Washington University – did not move as quickly as Dr. Mohler seems to think, it’s only taken G.W.U’s dorm policy around 22 years to catch up with the reality of campus life when I was a student from 1984-88. As a somewhat naive Southern Baptist … Read entire article »

“Who is a Christian?”: Lifeway’s Asinine Survey

Not helpful!  That would be how I would describe Lifeway Research’s just released survey which asked 1000 Protestant pastors one question: “Which, if any, of the following people do you believe are Christians?” Lifeway, affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, was kind enough to supply the respondents with a list of five names on which to opine whether or not they believed said individuals were in fact Christians.  A curious question given the fact that most, if not all, of the respondents do not know any of the asked-about individuals personally. The five well-known politicians and television personalities (some fall in both categories) were:  President Barack Obama, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Oprah Winfrey, and former President George W. Bush.  Gee, thanks Lifeway!  Glad they didn’t include Pope Benedict XVI.  That would have been really … Read entire article »

Baptist Pastors, Five Guys Burgers & Providence

On a recent trip to Dallas with my oldest son, Stephen, we stopped by the Galleria Mall.  With four stories of shopping, an ice skating rink on the lower level, and the nation’s tallest indoor Christmas tree, the Galleria is a shopper’s paradise (at least if you have money or a credit card). For those of us who love food (Baptist pastors most especially), there is no shortage of eateries in the Galleria.  We discovered one of those places tucked away on the lower level next to the ice skating rink:  Five Guys Burgers and Fries.  When I spotted the sign, I vaguely remembered reading about Five Guys.  I told my son that I thought that the burger joint started in NYC, although it turns out that the first Five Guys originated in … Read entire article »
