When Pro-Life Politicians Act the Fool!

“Every sensible person acts knowledgeably, but a fool displays his stupidity.”  Proverbs 13:16 (HCSB) Facebook is tailor-made for displays of stupidity!  It is a place for otherwise sensible people to “act the fool.”  Sometimes, it’s difficult to tell the difference.  You never know what you will learn on Facebook.  From the trivial to the terrific, one can glean information not only about friends, but about what those friends think and believe about issues that we face each and every day. Earlier this week, I saw where one of my Facebook friends, Susan — a friend who I have known since Mrs. Christian’s Kindergarten class — linked to an article (the article maybe somewhat graphic for some of my readers) describing a proposed law in Georgia that has been introduced by a pro-life State Representative. As a … Read entire article »

Obama & the SBC: When Words & Actions Conflict

“For eighteen long months, you have stood up, one by one, and said enough to the politics of the past. You understand that in this election, the greatest risk we can take is to try the same old politics with the same old players and expect a different result. You have shown what history teaches us – that at defining moments like this one, the change we need doesn’t come from Washington. Change comes to Washington. Change happens because the American people demand it – because they rise up and insist on new ideas and new leadership, a new politics for a new time.  America, this is one of those moments.  I believe that as hard as it will be, the change we need is coming. Because I’ve seen it.” … Read entire article »

The First GCR Era Pastors’ Conference

Almost four months away, this year’s Southern Baptist Convention Pastors’ Conference — the first in the GCR Era — promises to be something totally different.  Different is not always a bad thing, but radically different may not necessarily be a good thing either. As the speakers and worship leaders for the Pastors’ Conference were announced, some Southern Baptists began to express varying levels of concern about some of those who were invited to participate (see here, here, here, and here).  Most of the criticism (rightly so) has focused on the invitation extended to Jamar Jones – “Executive Director of Music and Fine Arts at the Potter’s House Church of Dallas, Texas, Bishop T.D. Jake, Senior Pastor” —  to lead instrumental music at the Phoenix Pastors’ Conference. Others have well expressed the theological concerns of having someone … Read entire article »

Mike Huckabee, Radical Islam & Slippery Slopes

“But, add feelings to the list of those things that are now subject to scrutiny by the Islamist lobby in this country.  First actions (South Park).  Then words (Franklin Graham).  Now feelings (Juan Williams).  But, where will it end, especially in regards to Islam?  Your guess is as good as mine.  If CAIR and NPR keep getting their way, most Americans — both conservatives and even a few liberals — may no longer be able to recognize the First Amendment.  Remember, the slippery slope always starts somewhere!“  (From “Slippery Slopes:  Speech, Islam & NPR“) We can now add common-sense, reasonable opinion to that which is no longer worthy of First Amendment protection, at least if CAIR (Council for American Islamic Relations), the Daily Kos, and other left-wing, anti-Christian groups get their way.  The latest example of the … Read entire article »

Responding When Others Violate Spirit of the “Game”

You can learn much about yourself and about others through playing competitive sports.  Today, coaching a 9/10 year-old basketball team in a “recreational” league, was a reminder of that fact of life. When I was younger, I played competetive sports — football, baseball, and tennis.  One sport that I did not play nor have I ever even faked liking is the sport of basketball.  However, due to divine Providence and God having a sense of humor, my wife and I volunteered to coach not one, but two, basketball teams for our sons’ Christian school. Our teams are part of the “Recreation” League in our community.  I put “recreation” in quotes because there is nothing recreational about the league, contrary to the letter and, most importantly, the spirit of how the game is supposed to be played. Stressed at the beginning of … Read entire article »
