The New NAMB: 7 Years Sure Goes By Fast!
I’ve never visited Alpharetta, Georgia, the home of the former North American Mission Board and the newly reinvented NAMB. However, it appears that there must be some glitch in the time-space continuum that causes not only months, but years, to accelerate at an astronomical rate. How else to explain how 90 days turned into two weeks or, more recently, how seven years suddenly became 10 months. There must be some logical explanation for the time warp that the new NAMB appears to be stuck in. When Dr. Kevin Ezell was elected President of the new North American Mission Board, he told Dr. Ed Stetzer that he would take the first three months on the job to get the lay of the land: I know there are a lot of expectations, but I want to … Read entire article »

Shocking: Wimpy Kid Knocks Out Sucker Punch
Who’d of thunk it? A family friendly film opening in March –Spring Break week for many school-aged children around the country — beating a visually-stunning trashy-looking mess of a movie at the box office this weekend. But, that’s exactly what happened when The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules bested Sucker Punch. All of Hollywood must be completely confused this morning following what can only be described as a disappointing debacle for Warner Brothers and director Zack Snyder. No one in the intelligent artistic community would have even thought that Wimpy Kid 2 would perform as well as it did, much less take in more money that the overhyped and overpraised Sucker Punch. Despite a furious last-ditch marketing campaign to boost Punch’s numbers, the audience for this movie was limited, at best. My … Read entire article »
American Idolization of Republican Primary Process
Let the Republican Presidential contest begin! With no formally announced candidates entered into next year’s Republican Primary, it’s interesting to calculate the odds of winning for potential entrants. Based on both polling data and common sense, we could narrow down the field of likely winners with relative ease. While I am no prophet nor the son of a prophet, I’ll share my thoughts on some of the more popular figures in the GOP who may run for President in 2012. That way, you can either say “You were wrong,” or I can say, “See, I told you so.” First, the polls. In the latest Gallop poll , former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee stands atop the list as the candidate more Republicans and/or Republican-leaning Independents prefer when asked who they would vote for in 2012. With 19%, Huckabee leads Romney (15%), Palin (12%), Gingrich … Read entire article »

Limiting Your Audience: SBC Pastor’s Conference
You would think that leaders of the first GCR Era Southern Baptist Convention Pastor’s Conference — scheduled to debut in Phoenix this June — would desire to have the biggest possible audience for this annual event. Knowing that the southwestern location would itself limit the number of pastors who could attend, one might assume that the Aspire 2011 SBCPC would focus on the content and casting (i.e., speakers) to leverage turnout. Apart from last year’s two-day long commercial for the GCR, I have enjoyed the Pastor’s Conferences that I have attended in the past. As a life-long Southern Baptist, I am predisposed to like this time of worship prior to the SBC’s annual meeting. What’s not to like — great preaching and singing and an opportunity for many pastors like me — who are in … Read entire article »

Limiting Your Audience: Janeane Garofalo & Criminal Minds
My wife and I enjoy watching the television program, Criminal Minds. We have followed the exploits of the fictionalized B.A.U. (Behavioral Analysis Unit) from the very first episode, which aired in September 2005. Even though we fit into the key demographic — 18-49 year-olds — we are now beyond that even more coveted sub-group, the 18-35 year-olds. Alas, with age and experience come some downsides. Although older viewers tend to be some of the most loyal, advertisers believe that the younger demographic is where it’s at. A series can lose the over-50 crowd and still survive. But, heaven forbid if the show hemorrhages younger viewers. When this begins to happen, it’s only a matter of time before the series is either cancelled or fails to get picked up for another season. Because of the obsession with the … Read entire article »
