Sneezes, “Bless You” & Foolish Teachers in CA

In one public school teacher’s class in Northern California (why is it always California?), apparently saying “bless you” to a fellow student who has sneezed is now considered both “disrespectful and disruptive.”  Steve “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” Cuckovich has banned students from uttering such a profane phrase in his classroom.  I truly feel sorry for those California parents who are not in a position to remove their children from the public schools in that state. One student had 25 points taken off by this brilliant teacher because of the offensive “bless you.”  Of course, Mr. Cuckovich says his actions have nothing to do with religion whatsoever.  It was only to teach the students that this silly superstition was no longer acceptable in a post-modern culture.  Too bad that Cuckovich doesn’t … Read entire article »

SBC Name Changes, Dixie & Family Pride

Since SBC President Bryant Wright’s September 19 announcement to the Executive Committee that he had unilaterally appointed an “unofficial” task force to study changing the name of the Southern Baptist Convention, there have been many new names that have been suggested.  Some of the names I have seen bandied about at SBC Voices are:  Evangelical Baptist Convention, Assembly of Evangelical Baptists, and the Great Commission Baptist Network.  Dr. Steve Lemke, at SBC Today, although not endorsing a name change, has nevertheless proposed Fellowship of Baptist Christians (FBC) as a potential new name. On Wednesday over at SBC Voices, in a comment on my OP, “SBC Name Change: Silence of Elder Statesmen Deafening,” a new name was thrown into the ring:  Dixie Baptist Convention.  I don’t know what to say.  It’s hard enough having an entire region of the … Read entire article »

Ruling Elites & Their Disdain for Democracy

To solve the serious problems facing our country, we need to minimize the harm from legislative inertia by relying more on automatic policies and depoliticized commissions for certain policy decisions. In other words, radical as it sounds, we need to counter the gridlock of our political institutions by making them a bit less democratic. (“Too Much of a Good Thing:  Why we need less democracy”) What a novel approach to governance.  Instead of allowing the people, through their elected representatives to make laws, why not set up “depoliticized commissions” (as if there is such an animal) to avoid the mess of democracy?  While the above statement could have been spoken by any number of people, would it surprise you to know that it was President Obama’s former Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag?  What exactly is … Read entire article »

SBC Name Change: Silence of Statesmen is Deafening

“There arises defining moments in our personal lives, our churches, and our denomination. I believe we are at one of those crossroads.  In the final analysis we must trust our process, our common goal of bringing the Gospel to the world, and each other.” Who was the Southern Baptist statesman who uttered these words and what was the context within which they were said?  None other than Dr. Jim Henry, former Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Orlando and a former two-term President of the SBC, in his endorsement of the GCR.  During his tenure as President of the Convention, Dr. Henry had occasion to visit Southern Seminary and stay in the Seminary’s Guest House.  At the time, my wife and I were the hostess and host of the Guest House.  During our 2 1/2 … Read entire article »

SBC Name Change: Elites Cannot Control Debate

Mohler acknowledged that the idea of changing the convention name is a highly charged issue that has the potential to create division (emphasis added) if not handled responsibly. (full article here) The Monday evening announcement led some Executive Committee members to express concern over the possibility of a name change and of the task force being asked to serve without convention approval. Some also said the issue could be divisive. (emphasis added) Wright responded by saying any proposed name change must be approved by messengers. (full article here) A unilaterally appointed Name Change Study Task Force created without apparent Constitutional authority.  Who would have thunk that such an unprecedented action would have had the potential to create division within the Convention?  If the way in which this Task Force came into being is not the height of irresponsibility, then I would … Read entire article »
