They deserve leaders who don\u2019t shave corners, don\u2019t play games, don\u2019t take things out of context.\u201d Newt Gingrich (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/georgia-politics-elections\/romney-racking-up-early-1331519.html\" target=\"_blank\">quoted while in the International Church of Las Vegas<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After reading the above\u00a0gem &#8212;\u00a0delivered by Newt Gingrich\u00a0inside a church in Las Vegas Friday night &#8212; I would have expected to read this morning that the former\u00a0Speaker of the House\u00a0had been struck by lightning.\u00a0 We know that\u00a0some (many) politicians are fond of stretching the truth from time to time, but telling a whopper as big\u00a0as this one &#8212; while standing in church no less &#8212;\u00a0is almost too much for even Newt Gingrich.\u00a0 I say almost because it is abundantly clear that the man has no shame.\u00a0 No shame over committing adultery, no shame over acting arrogantly (and petulantly), no\u00a0shame over violating ethics rules\u00a0which cost him his Speakership, no shame over running slanderous\u00a0ads accusing his opponent of abusing Holocaust survivors,\u00a0and no shame over using the church as a campaign tool for his\u00a0own\u00a0deluded ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gingrich was certainly right about one thing &#8212; Americans <em>&#8220;deserve leaders who don&#8217;t shave corners, don&#8217;t play games, and don&#8217;t take things out of context.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Using his own criteria &#8212; which he is very careful not to apply to himself &#8212; Newt Gingrich has to be one of the most unqualified men to ever run for office of President of the United States.\u00a0 As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/articles\/288989\/gingrich-republican-clinton-rich-lowry\" target=\"_blank\">National Review&#8217;s Rich Lowry wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Newt is the Republican Clinton \u2014 shameless, needy, hopelessly egotistical. The two former adversaries and tentative partners have largely the same set of faults and talents. They are self-indulgent, prone to disregard rules inconvenient to them, and consumed by ambition. They are glib, knowledgeable, and imaginative. They are baby boomers who hadn\u2019t fully grown up even when they occupied two of the most powerful offices in the land.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t need Bill Clinton when he was in office.\u00a0 We certainly don&#8217;t need a Republican version of\u00a0Clinton today.\u00a0 Which begs the question:\u00a0 <em>Why are so many Evangelical Christians enamored with Newt Gingrich&#8217;s candidacy?\u00a0<\/em><a title=\"Newt Gingrich &amp; Evangelicals: Strange Bedfellows\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/06\/03\/newt-gingrinch-evangelicals-strange-bedfellows\/\"> Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows.<\/a>\u00a0 However, if we\u00a0truly believe that character\u00a0matters &#8212; yes, even for\u00a0conservative Republicans and not just for liberal Democrats &#8212; then conservative Evangelicals, particularly\u00a0of the Southern Baptist variety,\u00a0will conclude that they cannot\u00a0support Newt\u00a0Gingrich for the\u00a0most powerful office in the world.\u00a0 He has already shown us in the past and continues to show us in the present that <a title=\"Can a 2x Adulterer Be Elected President?\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/05\/12\/can-a-2x-adulterer-be-elected-president\/\">he lacks the character and moral integrity to\u00a0be Commander-in-Chief.<\/a>\u00a0 To continue with this charade &#8212; no matter how much one might be uncomfortable with Mitt Romney nor how badly one wants to see the current President defeated in November &#8212; is to be accused, rightly so, of hypocrisy of the highest order.<\/p>\n<p>As fellow blogger William Thornton (<a href=\"www.sbcplodder.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\">SBCPlodder<\/a>)\u00a0offered <a title=\"Newt Gingrich, FBC Jax &amp; Moral Negligence\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2012\/01\/31\/newt-gingrich-fbc-jax-moral-negligence\/\" target=\"_blank\">on my recent post about Gingrich<\/a>:\u00a0<em> &#8220;The Evangelical church in America today is much like Esau, selling our birthright for a mess of pottage.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>Before diving into the food that Gingrich keeps serving, Evangelicals would do well to take a closer look.\u00a0 The closer they look, the more they will realize that the red meat that Gingrich dangles is nothing more than rancid meat that&#8217;s not even fit for pottage!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI am ashamed of the negativity and the dishonesty that has characterized this campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cAmerica deserves leaders who care enough to tell the truth.
