My Sunday Night Dates With The Good Wife
I like The Good Wife. There, I said it. I know. I just gave up “man points” for admitting that I enjoy watching the CBS Sunday night drama starring Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick, the wife of a Chicago politician who was involved in a sexual scandal reminiscent of the all-too-familiar real-life political scandals of recent years. With only two episodes left this season, I can take solace in knowing that I have 16 episodes of Season 2 still to watch. I’ve already breezed through the first season’s episodes on the DVD’s that I bought last month (that was another deduction of “man points” when I let that slip at the office). I don’t know why it took me so long to start watching The Good Wife. Well, that’s not entirely true. I do know why I avoided this … Read entire article »

Tweets of SBC Elites & What They Reveal
I confess that I have a Twitter account — you can follow me @fromlaw2grace (shameless promotional plug). The only tweets that you will find are the ones about my latest From Law to Grace blog posts. Apart from that, I can honestly say that I have never once posted a tweet that I have composed. Quite frankly, I don’t get Twitter. Yes, it is another means of communication in our ever-increasing social media, youth-oriented culture (at-large and in the SBC/GCB). There are pastors and Convention leaders who skillfully use Twitter to get out a particular message. But, for every good use of Twitter, there is the temptation to succumb to a narcissistic personality that cries to be unleashed. It seems that most of the SBC’s movers and shakers — from entity heads to megachurch pastors — have a Twitter account. … Read entire article »

After a Respite, From Law to Grace Returns
Following my trip to Phoenix for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in June, where I planned on live blogging, but instead ended up spending most of the time in my hotel room sicker than I have been in a long, long time, I thought that I would get back to blogging straight away. For good or for bad, that did not happen. In the last month, I have taken a much-needed respite from blogging, not only to regain my physical strength, but also my spiritual and emotional strength. Even after a week of teaching 23 5th & 6th graders at the Big Apple Adventure Vacation Bible School last week and a trip to Albuquerque for a Baptist Convention of New Mexico Executive Board Meeting/Vacation with my family this week, I am strangely … Read entire article »

The New NAMB: Bad Precedents & UnAnswered Questions
Coming through this Easter season, I strongly encouraged our congregation to give sacrificially to the Annie Armstrong Offering for North American Missions. While a few of our church leaders know my reservations about the direction and vision of the new NAMB, I did not express that concern with the members at large. With new changes announced at NAMB on an almost weekly basis, I knew that there would be time to ask the hard questions that need to be asked regarding our church’s continued investment and partnership with the new NAMB, but this Annie Armstrong season was not the time. Having met our church goal of $7,500, our Missions Development Committee agreed to add an additional $5,000 to the Easter offering as we have done the past four years. Having received a letter a few weeks … Read entire article »

New Mexico Baptists, the new NAMB & the Future
I love New Mexico and I love New Mexico Baptists! The BCNM, made up of approximately 350 cooperating Southern Baptist churches (although levels of cooperation vary) in the Land of Enchantment, has been assisting churches in cooperative missions and ministry for almost 100 years. Whether at the beginning of last century or in the second decade of this century, New Mexico Baptists have a fertile mission field. With a population of around 2 million, New Mexico — the fifth largest state geographically — boasts a diverse population. In addition to the Anglo and Hispanic (Mexican and Spanish) community, NM is also home to a large Native American population (Navajo and Apache) on two Reservations and 19 Pueblos. As part of our total mission field, the BCNM estimates that upwards of 90% of New Mexicans — regardless of … Read entire article »
