GCB: ABC’s Campy Parody of Cultural Christians
Campy: (Performing Arts / Theatre) consciously artificial, exaggerated, vulgar, or mannered; self-parodying, esp when in dubious taste. (The Free Dictionary) After watching the first episode of ABC’s GCB, I think it would be safe to say that any concern that Americans will confuse this campy television show with the Southern Baptist Convention’s new nickname – Great Commission Baptists (GBC for short) — has, in hindsight, proven unfounded. Not that the concern was unwarranted. However, this mid-season series, which debuted Sunday night, is so campy that no one could reasonably conclude that this was intended to be anything but a parody of cultural Christianity — not that there’s anything wrong with that. Maybe because I just visited Dallas with my son or perhaps because I loved the high camp of the Ewings in the 1980s series, Dallas, I couldn’t help but find … Read entire article »

Worship at The Village Church & a Quest for BBQ in Dallas
On a beautiful Sunday morning in Dallas, my oldest son, Stephen, and I decided to head to the Dallas Northway Campus of The Village Church for the 11:15 a.m. Worship Service. Actually, Stephen didn’t really have any choice in the matter. Truth be told, I didn’t really have a choice either. While I might be an inconsistent Calvinist in my practice, I know and believe in God’s total sovereignty. When I share with the congregation at Bethel Alamogordo on Sundays, “No one is here by accident or coincidence. God has brought each of us here today with purpose and reason, to hear from Him and to leave changed because we have been in His presence,” I truly believe that. By the way, I don’t think you have to consider yourself a Reformed … Read entire article »

A Road Trip & Quest for Good BBQ in Dallas
Early Saturday morning, my oldest son, Stephen, and I head to Dallas for his six-month check-up at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Diagnosed with Legg-Perthes Disease when he was six, Stephen has struggled with this childhood hip condition for half his life. There are certainly times when, like any of us coping with aches and pains, he struggles more. However, he continues to handle his “thorn in the flesh” quite well for a young man on the precipice of his teenage years. In November 2010, Stephen and I embarked on our first Father/Son road trip to Big D. Apart from time spent in DFW Airport, that was my first trip to the land of the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and, Ewings. In spite of my built-up prejudice against all things Texas because of too many … Read entire article »
Tebow Derangement Syndrome: Season 2
With Denver Broncos’ new head coach, John Fox, looking increasingly like he will start mediocre Kyle Orton at quarterback when the NFL season gets underway next month, one is reminded of the special talent that is Tim Tebow. James A. Smith, Sr., Editor of The Florida Baptist Witness, has a great article up entitled “It’s not hard to root for Tim Tebow.” While I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Smith about the ease of which football fans – particularly Christians — can root for Tebow (as a life-long F.S.U. Seminoles’ fan who married into a Gator family almost 20 years ago, I can personally attest to that fact), there are a good many people who find it easy to root against Tim Tebow. Some of these are former NFL players — now football analysts on television – who, for whatever reason, appear … Read entire article »
