’80s Child Stars Launch Unfunny Attack on Free Speech

In what appears to be a desperate bid for another 15 minutes of fame, several child “stars” from such notable forgettable 1980s sitcoms like Mr. Belvedere and Charles in Charge have made a “Funny or Die” video (those easily offended should probably not watch it) about fellow ’80s child star Kirk Cameron of Growing Pains. The video, which is supposed to be humorous, takes aim at Cameron’s controversial views on homosexuality. Cameron reportedly was not offended by the video, even finding it funny. Did Cameron really find the mock video funny or was he exhibiting grace toward those who were intentionally ridiculing him? As a born-again Christian, Cameron may have been applying Biblical principles to the situation: “To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; … Read entire article »

Bible Reading, Gay T-Shirts & Jesus’ Message

What does a Calvary Chapel Pastor in California have in common with a gay teenager in Ohio? If your first guess was, “I can’t think of anything that they would have in common,” no one would probably blame you for giving that answer. You see, both the California Pastor, Mark Mackey, of Hemet and Maverick Couch, a gay high school student in Ohio, were persecuted — and in the case of Mackey, prosecuted — for sharing a message about Jesus. Looking at it through our own biases and our own beliefs about who Jesus is, we might be tempted to support the Pastor in the one case and be indifferent to the plight of the gay student in the other case, or vice versa. However, if we want to stand for truly conservative principles which … Read entire article »

Conservative Principles & Assaults on Free Speech

With Texas (and a little sliver of Oklahoma) to our east and Arizona to our west, New Mexico is stuck in the middle of those more populous states. That’s okay. As far as geography goes, there’s much to be said for being in the middle. I like to visit Dallas and Phoenix (although the only time I’ve been to the latter, I was sick as a dog throughout the SBC Annual Meeting last year), but I wouldn’t want to live in either of those places. Whenever I say something like this, my wife tells me that’s where God will end up moving us. I should know better by now. When it comes to where I personally stand on issues — theological, political, social, and economic —  I am most certainly not a moderate. … Read entire article »

Sneezes, “Bless You” & Foolish Teachers in CA

In one public school teacher’s class in Northern California (why is it always California?), apparently saying “bless you” to a fellow student who has sneezed is now considered both “disrespectful and disruptive.”  Steve “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” Cuckovich has banned students from uttering such a profane phrase in his classroom.  I truly feel sorry for those California parents who are not in a position to remove their children from the public schools in that state. One student had 25 points taken off by this brilliant teacher because of the offensive “bless you.”  Of course, Mr. Cuckovich says his actions have nothing to do with religion whatsoever.  It was only to teach the students that this silly superstition was no longer acceptable in a post-modern culture.  Too bad that Cuckovich doesn’t … Read entire article »

Dollywood, Lesbians & the Neidermeyer Complex

You may know him as The Maestro — Bob Cobb — from several memorable episodes of Seinfeld.  But, before Mark Metcalf was The Maestro, he was Neidermeyer, the tightly wound ROTC officer in the 1978 John Landis-directed classic, Animal House.  Neidermeyer, who was a thorn in the Deltas’ side, always exerted his “authority” in ham-fisted ways.  Give someone a little bit of power and too many times he uses it in a completely moronic way like Douglas Neidermeyer. Sadly, the Neidermeyer Complex is alive and well in our land today.  The latest example comes from that bastion of family fun and frivolity known as Dollywood.  Located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Dollywood is indeed a great family attraction.  When we lived in SW Virginia, we would make at least one 3-hour trip to Dollywood every … Read entire article »
