Tweets of SBC Elites & What They Reveal

I confess that I have a Twitter account — you can follow me @fromlaw2grace (shameless promotional plug). The only tweets that you will find are the ones about my latest From Law to Grace blog posts.  Apart from that, I can honestly say that I have never once posted a tweet that I have composed. Quite frankly, I don’t get Twitter. Yes, it is another means of communication in our ever-increasing social media, youth-oriented culture (at-large and in the SBC/GCB).  There are pastors and Convention leaders who skillfully use Twitter to get out a particular  message.  But, for every good use of Twitter, there is the temptation to succumb to a narcissistic personality that cries to be unleashed. It seems that most of the SBC’s movers and shakers — from entity heads to megachurch pastors — have a Twitter account. … Read entire article »

Baptist Press: The CNN of the Baptist World!

When I was in law school at Florida State University, CNN was THE 24-hour cable news outlet.  In fact, it was the only such cable news source at the time.  When Operation Desert Storm commenced on January 17, 1991, I was glued to CNN for all the live, front-line news from Kuwait.  In July 1994, shortly before moving with my wife to Louisville to begin our studies at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, I recovered from wisdom teeth surgery by watching the Pre-trial hearing in the O.J. Simpson murder case.  Later on, I would be sitting in our basement apartment at the Seminary Guest House watching CNN’s live coverage of the ”not guilty” verdict (which doesn’t necessarily mean “innocent”) when it was handed down.  As a major political junkie, I would stay up into the wee hours of the night every … Read entire article »

Countdown to SBC Phoenix: What to Expect?

After being in Dallas for a few days for our son, Stephen’s, appointment at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (he has Legg-Perthes Disease, a childhood hip condition), I am looking forward to my first visit to Phoenix next week for this year’s annual get-together of the nation’s largest Protestant body.  At the moment, I want to be in Phoenix because the “dry heat” in Arizona has to be preferable to the miserably humid temperatures that we have encountered in Texas this week.  As a native Floridian, who has called New Mexico home for the past four years, I gladly admit that I do not miss the high temperatures AND high humidity that comes with living back east.  It has been nice actually seeing the rain and all the green grass, but that’s not enough to tempt … Read entire article »

The New NAMB: Bad Precedents & UnAnswered Questions

Coming through this Easter season, I strongly encouraged our congregation to give sacrificially to the Annie Armstrong Offering for North American Missions.  While a few of our church leaders know my reservations about the direction and vision of the new NAMB, I did not express that concern with the members at large.  With new changes announced at NAMB on an almost weekly basis, I knew that there would be time to ask the hard questions that need to be asked regarding our church’s continued investment and partnership with the new NAMB, but this Annie Armstrong season was not the time. Having met our church goal of $7,500, our Missions Development Committee agreed to add an additional $5,000 to the Easter offering as we have done the past four years.  Having received a letter a few weeks … Read entire article »

5 Guys, Potatoes & Investing in the new NAMB

At the beginning of June, my family and I will be taking a trip to Dallas for my oldest son’s six-month check-up at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.  Stephen, who turns 12 on June 22, was diagnosed in 2006 with Perthes Disease, a childhood medical condition affecting his right hip.  After five years of living with this often-times painful condition, surgery for Stephen may be in his future.  While we may not be looking forward to putting our son through surgery, our family is looking forward to spending some quality time in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  I hear Six Flags calling our name! This will be my second trip to Dallas (not counting layovers at DFW Airport).  Last November was my first time in Dallas.  It was just Stephen and I on a father/son road … Read entire article »
