Will the Black Church Rebuke Obama Over Gay Marriage?

That didn’t take long. After Vice President Biden on Sunday opened the floodgates, it was only a matter of time before President Obama publicly expressed what most political observers already knew: that he supports so-called same-sex marriage. Biden, in answering a question posed by Meet the Press’ David Gregory, proudly declared: “The president sets the policy.  I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties.  And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction — beyond that.” If the Vice President, a practicing Roman Catholic, doesn’t “see much of a distinction” between traditional marriage and gay marriage, then he perhaps needs to take remedial catechism classes as well as … Read entire article »

Romney & Driscoll at Liberty U: Blurry Vision

What a week for Liberty University, “the largest private non-profit university in the nation, the largest university in Virginia, and the largest Christian university in the world . . . with a vision to train Champions for Christ as a world class university.” (About LU) With the April 19th announcement that Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, will speak at this year’s commencement ceremony and, the giddy welcome of Mark Driscoll to the Lynchburg, VA campus on April 20th, this has been a “stellar” week for the school that Jerry Falwell built. But, with both those announcements, LU continues to blur the lines between a sound (fundamental, if you prefer) Biblical theology and a watered-down (downgraded, if you will) cultural Christianity far too enamored with the world of politics and society. First, Governor Romney. I should be … Read entire article »

LU, Mark Driscoll & New Media’s Bright Light!

The establishment just doesn’t get it. Or, maybe they do, and they just don’t want to publicly admit that they get it. Get what, you ask? The role that new media — Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, etc. — play in keeping the light shining brightly on those who would love to act in secret. It’s not that leaders like Mark Driscoll or those at “conservative” Liberty University want to avoid the spotlight. In fact, many celebrity pastors and well-known Christian leaders go out of their way to stay in the spotlight. But, when it comes to questioning their decisions or their judgment, it’s amazing how desperate some leaders become to avoid the sunshine of true openness and transparency. Many leaders, including those within the SBC, like to talk a good game when it comes to … Read entire article »

Conspiracy Theories & Wackadoodles in the SBC!

What do the Gospel Project and the Great Commission Resurgence have in common with Roswell Aliens, JFK’s assassination, Area 51, 9/11 Truthers, and Obama Birthers?  If you guessed that each has at least one conspiracy theory attached to it, then you probably know more about conspiracy theories than you should.  You see, someone who believes in that many conspiracy theories could probably be classified as a wackadoodle.  I like that word.  I’d never heard of the word wackadoodle (aka nut jobs, lunatics, crazies, etc.) until my Student Pastor, Jon, used it to describe a man he once worked with in ministry.  I’ve heard of some strange teachings and doctrines — although usually not in Southern Baptist churches — but this man’s teachings would qualify him to be known as a certifiable wackadoodle.  And believe me.  No one wants … Read entire article »

Newt Gingrich: A Man With No Shame!

“I am ashamed of the negativity and the dishonesty that has characterized this campaign,” he said. “America deserves leaders who care enough to tell the truth. They deserve leaders who don’t shave corners, don’t play games, don’t take things out of context.” Newt Gingrich (quoted while in the International Church of Las Vegas) After reading the above gem – delivered by Newt Gingrich inside a church in Las Vegas Friday night — I would have expected to read this morning that the former Speaker of the House had been struck by lightning.  We know that some (many) politicians are fond of stretching the truth from time to time, but telling a whopper as big as this one — while standing in church no less – is almost too much for even Newt Gingrich.  I say almost because it is … Read entire article »
