Bush Derangement Syndrome<\/a><\/strong><\/em>: the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of George W. Bush.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This “psychological disorder,” first discovered by Charles Krauthammer, the conservative political analyst, in December 2003,\u00a0has been\u00a0used to describe the completely inane babblings of otherwise “intelligent” people whenever they hear\u00a0George W. Bush’s name even mentioned.\u00a0 You might think that BDS would have gone into remission after the election of the\u00a0“One,” Barack Hussein Obama, but two years after that historic event, supposedly sane people continue to mock and ridicule the former President,\u00a0despite the stubborn facts to the contrary notwithstanding.<\/p>\n

Derangement Syndromes continue to be popular in the world of politics (see “Palin Derangement\u00a0Syndrome”), but continue to manifest themselves in other worlds as well.\u00a0 In fact, DS has taken center stage in the sports world with many otherwise intelligent\u00a0football analysts and commentators suffering from a severe case of Tebow Derangement Syndrome:<\/p>\n

the acute onset of\u00a0mockery and verbal “hatred”\u00a0in otherwise normal people in reaction to the\u00a0football prowess and play\u00a0— nay — the very existence of Tim Tebow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I wish I could say that I was the first to coin the phrase, but others began to see troubling signs of this “psychological disorder” as early as September 2009<\/a>:<\/p>\n

What we have here is a case of Tebow Derangement Syndrome, or TDS. It largely springs from Tebow’s Christian faith. He literally wears it on his face with those Bible-verse eye patches.
\nTDS sufferers think there’s no place for religion in sports. But if a player says he’s inspired by the death of his pet turtle, or eating chicken gizzards makes him play out of his mind, we nod and think it’s cute.\u00a0 If a player says he’s inspired by a Bible verse, we call him pious and say he’s cramming God down our throats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Tebow Derangement Syndrome (“TDS”) was somewhat muted during Tim Tebow’s last college season, when he led the University of Florida Gators to a winning record and a blow-out victory over Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl.\u00a0 However, a severe case of TDS erupted when Focus on the Family, the Colorado Springs-based evangelical Christian organization founded by Dr. James Dobson, announced that Tebow and his mother, Pam, had cut a “pro-life” commercial that would air during the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

Immediately, pro-choice<\/del> abortion groups, including the “National Organization for Women,” developed full-onset TDS.\u00a0 Even though Pam Tebow exercised her right and\u00a0“chose” to ignore her doctor’s advice to have an abortion, the nattering\u00a0nabobs at NOW, exposing the lie of their “pro-choice” language, did everything they could to vilify Tebow and his mother.\u00a0 In the end, CBS aired the\u00a0short, sweet , and rather inoffensive ad<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following this outbreak, Tebow Derangement Syndrome went into remission for a few months, only to re-emerge in April of 2010 when Tim Tebow was unexpectedly (at least by the so-called “experts”)\u00a0taken by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the N.F.L. draft.\u00a0\u00a0As a Florida native and someone who has followed the Florida Gators closely\u00a0during the Tebow years (full acknowledgement:\u00a0 I am a FSU\u00a0grad who married into a Gator family), I was both delighted and perplexed\u00a0to see the professional football analysts’ heads explode upon hearing that Tebow was drafted\u00a0#25.<\/p>\n

Throughout summer training camp and as late as last week, TDS outbreaks were few and far between.\u00a0 When Tim Tebow scored his first N.F.L. touchdown, Dan Marino and Boomer Esaison were\u00a0overheard ridiculing this accomplishment.<\/a>\u00a0 I’m sure they were similarly dismissive of\u00a0rookies\u00a0Sam Bradford (whom Tebow beat\u00a0in the\u00a0BCS Championship game), Colt McCoy, and Jimmy Clausen.\u00a0 Not!<\/p>\n

Now, with Tim Tebow’s first start this past Sunday as the quarterback for the Denver Broncos, we are witnessing once again a\u00a0fresh outbreak of Tebow Derangement Syndrome.\u00a0 Some, like Boomer Esiason, continue\u00a0to exhibit signs of\u00a0TDS.\u00a0 While damning Tebow with feigned praise,\u00a0Esiason, after watching (probably just the hightlights) only one game that Tebow has started, questions whether the former Gator, arguably\u00a0one of the best college football quarterbacks of all time, can play in the National Football League.<\/a><\/p>\n

Still others, who you would think might be immune to TDS, are apparently\u00a0quite susceptible\u00a0to\u00a0catch this\u00a0new, virulent strain.\u00a0 Some Denver Broncos’ fans can be diagnosed with the Syndrome.\u00a0 On a recent post on the Broncos’ Fan Forums, one poster asked the question, “Why is Tebow hated as a person and a player?”<\/a>\u00a0 One commenter answered:<\/p>\n

I think it is because he is a Christian. Non-Christians do not want to hear about his religion and Christians get defensive when someone critiques his skills as a qb. Many people don’t like him as a qb not as a person. Religion is a very polarizing thing.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
How else to explain this latest outbreak of TDS given Tebow’s\u00a0stellar football performance (comparatively speaking<\/a>)\u00a0on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders in less than ideal\u00a0playing conditions\u00a0in the “Black Hole?”\u00a0 \u00a0I wish that I could say that Tebow Derangement Syndrome can be cured by Tim Tebow playing well on the football field.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it cannot.\u00a0 The more he succeeds at the game\u00a0he loves to play, the\u00a0worse\u00a0TDS becomes.\u00a0 Those with TDS\u00a0continue to\u00a0inexplicably say and do thing\u00a0that are completely deranged (i.e., contrary to patently\u00a0obvious facts).\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n

And, it\u00a0appears that people who\u00a0contract any one of the\u00a0Derangement Syndromes (Bush, Palin, Tebow) are\u00a0destined to live with it for the rest of their lives.\u00a0 That’s too bad.\u00a0 I used to like Boomer Esiason.\u00a0 Really, I did.<\/div>\n
