{"id":2045,"date":"2011-05-19T06:00:01","date_gmt":"2011-05-19T12:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/?p=2045"},"modified":"2011-08-25T18:03:06","modified_gmt":"2011-08-26T00:03:06","slug":"garofalo-suspect-behavior-get-the-boot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/?p=2045","title":{"rendered":"Garofalo &#038; Suspect Behavior Get the Boot!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On <em>Dragnet<\/em>, Jack Webb would start his witness interviews with the\u00a0famous catchphrase, <em>&#8220;Just the facts, ma&#8217;am.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em> Here are the facts about two CBS shows &#8212; both police procedurals &#8212;\u00a0one renewed for a second season and the other cancelled after only one short outing as a mid-season replacement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Police Procedural #1:<\/strong>\u00a0 An updated\u00a0&#8220;re-make&#8221; of a popular 1970&#8217;s television drama.\u00a0 This show, set in an exciting, tropical locale, stars four young actors, with the lead character played by an Australian actor who had several previous CBS\u00a0series cancelled after short runs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Police Procedural #2<\/strong>:\u00a0 A spin-off of\u00a0a popular\u00a0crime drama (now finishing its 6th season).\u00a0 This show, set in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, stars six actors, one of whom won an academy award for\u00a0best actor and one who\u00a0also stars in the\u00a0original series that\u00a0gave birth to the new series.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On May 15, 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/tvseriesfinale.com\/tv-show\/mike-molly-hawaii-five-0-and-blue-bloods-to-be-renewed-for-season-two-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBS renewed for a second season <em>Hawaii Five-O<\/em><\/a>, the highly popular drama set in the Aloha State.\u00a0 Five-O has been one of this season&#8217;s strongest performers, even winning <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii_Five-0\" target=\"_blank\">the Best New TV Drama at the\u00a0<em>37th \u00a0People&#8217;s Choice Awards<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On May 17, 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvsquad.com\/2011\/05\/17\/cbs-cancels-criminal-minds-suspect-behavior-renews-csi-ny\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBS announced it\u00a0was cancelling\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvsquad.com\/2011\/05\/17\/cbs-cancels-criminal-minds-suspect-behavior-renews-csi-ny\/\" target=\"_blank\">Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.\u00a0<\/a> <\/em>Alas, there will be no second season for what should have been a promising new series with a built-in fan base from the original <em>Criminal Minds<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What we have here is a tale of two police\/crime dramas, with two very different outcomes following their first season.\u00a0 <em>Hawaii Five-O<\/em>, which ended season one\u00a0with a bang (and several cliff-hangers), looks primed for a long run.\u00a0 As a fan of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii_Five-O\" target=\"_blank\">the original series (1968-80)\u00a0starring Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett\u00a0and\u00a0James MacArthur as Det. Danny Williams (&#8220;Book &#8217;em, Danno&#8221;)\u00a0<\/a>, I was eagerly anticipating the new <em>Hawaii Five-O<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0As as child, I remember my parents\u00a0letting me stay up late\u00a0to\u00a0just to watch the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w\" target=\"_blank\">the theme song<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the opening episode where we are introduced to the &#8220;new&#8221; Steve McGarrett &#8212; played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1533927\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australian actor Alex O&#8217;Loughlin<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; through the tense final episode of its freshman season, the new <em>Hawaii Five-O<\/em>\u00a0did not disappoint.\u00a0 I DVRed\u00a0every episode and thoroughly\u00a0enjoyed this first season.\u00a0 I would daresay that Hawaii Five-O has become my favorite series to watch this past season (although the original CSI and <a title=\"The Pope &amp; Me: Fans of the Big Bang\u00a0Theory\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/01\/07\/the-pope-me-fans-of-the-big-bang-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\">Big Bang Theory <\/a>are tied for second).<\/p>\n<p>Why did Hawaii Five-O do so well in its first year, so well in fact that it was picked up for another season?\u00a0 While writing is critical to the success of any movie or television show, without\u00a0on-screen talent\u00a0to credibly act out what is written and, without characters who\u00a0the audience can like and relate to,\u00a0the show is dead in the water.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of Hawaii Five-O, not only are the four main actors &#8212; O&#8217;Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Grace Park &#8212; credible, but they portray their characters in such a way that they are likeable.\u00a0 Very quickly, the four (plus some compelling and quirky recurring characters who were introduced throughout the season) developed a chemistry that was evident to fans of the show.\u00a0\u00a0As a fan, I bought into the show mainly because of the characters\u00a0who the actors\u00a0portrayed (not to mention\u00a0my nostalgia for the original series).\u00a0 But, if\u00a0any of the actors themselves would have\u00a0been a\u00a0hindrance\u00a0for me\u00a0believing their characters, it would have made it difficult to\u00a0like the show and to keep watching week after week.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to <em>Criminal Minds:\u00a0 Suspect Behavior.\u00a0 <\/em>Even though I was pre-disposed to like this spin-off because of my affection for\u00a0<em>Criminal Minds<\/em>, the new show was a non-starter for me because of one thing:\u00a0 the casting of Janeane Garofalo.\u00a0 I, along with apparently many other people, did not watch a single episode of <em>Suspect Behavior<\/em>.\u00a0 And, in order to be renewed for a second season, it helps mightily to have ratings that go up, not down, throughout the course of your first\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<p>Why CBS and the producers of <em>Suspect Behavior<\/em> wanted to <a title=\"Limiting Your Audience: Janeane Garofalo &amp; Criminal\u00a0Minds\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/03\/22\/limiting-your-audience-janeane-garofalo-criminal-minds\/\" target=\"_blank\">limit their audience right off the bat with the hiring of Janeane Garofalo is baffling<\/a>.\u00a0 You would expect that folks\u00a0who spend millions of dollars in developing and\u00a0producing a television series would want a return on their investment.\u00a0 And, in order to get that return, that they would take reasonable measures to ensure its\u00a0commercial success.\u00a0 In Hollywood, as in most places, success = money!<\/p>\n<p>But, if you expected that from those involved with the train wreck that was <em>CM:\u00a0 Suspect Behavior<\/em>, you would be wrong.\u00a0 No one wants to say why this series did not make it after all.\u00a0 At Nikki Finke&#8217;s\u00a0Deadline Hollywood, Nellie Andreeva acknowledges that <em>Suspect Behavior<\/em> did not meet expectations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Given the great success CBS has had with expanding its<em> CSI<\/em> and <em>NCIS<\/em> crime drama franchises, <em>Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior<\/em> has been a disappointment, never finding its footing behind the mothership <em>Criminal Minds<\/em> series on Wednesday.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ms. Andreeva, however,\u00a0fails to explore the reason why the series never found its footing.\u00a0 Let me give it a shot.\u00a0 I believe one of the main reasons that <em>Criminal Minds:\u00a0 Suspect Behavior<\/em>\u00a0failed to find and\/or keep an audience is because of the poor casting choice of Janeane\u00a0Garofalo.\u00a0 I do not fault Ms. Garafolo from wanting to be hired.\u00a0 I do fault CBS and the producers for hiring her in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>I am fully aware that the producers can hire whoever they want.\u00a0 I would not prevent them from choosing the actors and actresses who they thought best for each of the roles.\u00a0 But, why would they hire a woman <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/2009\/05\/janeane-garofalo-voice-left-wing-bigotry\" target=\"_blank\">who is well known\u00a0for her ugly diatribes against Christians, Tea Partiers, Conservatives, and Republicans<\/a>?\u00a0 They are crippling themselves and limiting their audience by offending so many potential viewers.\u00a0 At\u00a0least that was the case with my family.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure it was the case for\u00a0countless others.<\/p>\n<p>On multiple levels, CBS&#8217; decision to hire Janeane Garofalo made absolutely no sense.\u00a0 However, in the upside down world that is Hollywood, I&#8217;m quite certain that the folks associated with <em>Suspect Behavior<\/em> and the Hollywood elites will never understand how the choice of Ms. Garofalo affected viewership.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the viewers will decide what shows are worthy to stay on the air.\u00a0 And, they spoke loud and clear.\u00a0 <em>Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior\u00a0<\/em>and American leftist actress Janeane Garofalo get the boot.\u00a0 <em>Hawaii Five-O<\/em>\u00a0and Australian actor Alex O&#8217;Loughlin are coming back for a second season, baby!\u00a0 What a difference it makes when you don&#8217;t even know the politics of the actors and actresses\u00a0involved in a series.\u00a0 Aloha!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Dragnet, Jack Webb would start his witness interviews with the\u00a0famous catchphrase, &#8220;Just the facts, ma&#8217;am.&#8221;\u00a0 Here are the facts about two CBS shows &#8212;
