Boomer Esiason, the former, non-Super Bowl winning Quarterback who had an 80-93 record on teams he led, has blasted one of the league’s newest quarterbacks, Tim Tebow.\u00a0 In his official capacity as a football analyst for CBS Sports, Esiason\u00a0shared his latest thoughts on Tebow during a CBS Press Event on Tuesday in New York:<\/a><\/p>\n

“He can’t play. He can’t throw<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/em>I’m not here to insult him. The reality is he was a great college football player, maybe the greatest college football player of his time. But he’s not an NFL quarterback right now. Just because he’s God-fearing, and a great person off the field, and was a winner with the team that had the best athletes in college football, doesn’t mean his game is going to translate to the NFL.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At least he didn’t say that Tebow\u00a0throws the football like his mama.\u00a0 If Esiason\u00a0wasn’t insulting Tebow, I can’t imagine what he would have said if he intended to insult him. \u00a0However, no one should be surprised at the idiotic\u00a0comments that Boomer Esiason makes, particularly when it comes to another left-handed gunslinger.\u00a0 I previously wrote about Esiason’s\u00a0and Dan\u00a0Marino’s mocking remarks\u00a0(which they both thought were not being broadcast) after Tebow scored his first NFL touchdown.<\/a>\u00a0 Tebow had the temerity to run the ball in for a score instead of passing for the six points.\u00a0 You would think that these two former quarterbacks — now “professional” analysts — would have something positive to say about this accomplishment.\u00a0 You would, of course, be wrong.<\/p>\n

Both Esiason\u00a0and Marino can be heard (although not seen) joking about Tebow\u00a0having to run the ball because he couldn’t throw.\u00a0 I’m\u00a0quite sure that neither of these elite quarterbacks — who between them have zero Super Bowl rings —\u00a0would have had the same snide remarks about a Michael Vick running the ball in for a touchdown.\u00a0 Isn’t it amazing that a convicted felon who killed dogs for sport is held in higher regard by the NFL East\u00a0Coast elites than\u00a0someone like Tim Tebow<\/a>?<\/p>\n

No rational person — especially a\u00a0former quarterback\u00a0who didn’t exactly\u00a0light it up on the football field in his first starts for the Cincinnati Bengals — could possibly say that\u00a0Tebow\u00a0can’t play or throw.\u00a0 Is Esiason\u00a0insane or is he showing his hate for Tebow?\u00a0 And, like so many\u00a0others, including Merril\u00a0Hoge, who have jumped on the “trash TT bandwagon,” Esiason\u00a0just looks petty and foolish with such inane statements.\u00a0 It’s one thing to say that Tebow, who\u00a0has only three starts under his belt and who had a shortened pre-season, needs work.\u00a0 It’s quite something else to say that the two-time National Champion, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback “can’t play and can’t throw.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Why would someone make such patently\u00a0ridiculous\u00a0statements?\u00a0 I can only conclude that Esiason\u00a0not only has an irrational hatred of Tim Tebow, but he, like many others,\u00a0has a disdain for Tebow’s\u00a0Christian faith<\/a>.\u00a0 How else to explain\u00a0the words Esiason\u00a0chose to use to trash former Broncos’ Head Coach Josh McDaniels, all the while\u00a0taking\u00a0a not-so-subtle jab at Tebow’s\u00a0Christian faith<\/a>:<\/p>\n

“What (former Broncos coach) Josh McDaniel saw in him God only knows. Maybe God does know \u2014 because the rest of us don’t,” Esiason said.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Maybe Josh McDaniels\u00a0saw a fierce competitor with the heart of a champion.\u00a0 Maybe McDaniels\u00a0saw in Tebow\u00a0a two-time National Champion who won the Heisman Trophy as a Sophomore.\u00a0 Perhaps Coach McDaniels\u00a0saw in TT one of\u00a0college’s all-time best quarterbacks who broke every record for his position in arguably the best conference in college football — the Southeastern Conference.\u00a0 Maybe Josh McDaniels saw a young man whose\u00a0character and work ethic would make the Denver Broncos and the city of\u00a0Denver proud.<\/p>\n

I’m not sure who Esiason has in mind when he says “the rest of us don’t (know).”<\/em>\u00a0 Is he speaking for all former NFL quarterbacks?\u00a0 If so, the quarterback who beat Esiason and the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII — Joe Montana — didn’t get the memo.\u00a0 Montana, who led the San Francisco\u00a049er’s\u00a0to three Super Bowl victories in the 1980’s, said of Tebow<\/a>:<\/p>\n

“If you can throw it accurately and on time, I don’t care what your delivery
\nlooks like. Don’t change his delivery. Get his feet right, because he’s never
\ntaken a snap from under center. Let’s work on that part and see how the rest goes.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I hate to break it to Boomer, but there are many reasons why Tim Tebow\u00a0was\u00a0drafted\u00a0in the First Round\u00a0and why he should at least be given a chance to\u00a0succeed or fail on his own.\u00a0 Three starts (although good) does not a chance make.\u00a0 Boomer Esiason\u00a0may not have a clue as to why Tim Tebow\u00a0was drafted by the Broncos last year.\u00a0 But, I’m pretty sure God knows.\u00a0 When it comes to Tim Tebow, I think I’ll take God (and Joe Montana) over Boomer Esaison every day of the week and twice on Sunday!<\/p>\n
