(<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/George_Santayana\" target=\"_blank\">Paraphase of a George Santayana quote <\/a>from<\/em><\/strong> &#8220;The Life of Reason, Volume 1:\u00a0 Reason in Common Sense&#8221;)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When all is said and done, will\u00a0the two Johns &#8212; Fox and Elway\u00a0&#8212; be counted with\u00a0 Howard and Meyer or\u00a0with Dorminey?\u00a0 Meyer, of course, is fomer\u00a0University of Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer.\u00a0 Who, pray tell, are these Howard and Dorminey\u00a0fellow?\u00a0 Outside of rabid Florida high school football fans or those who have read (or, like me, have started reading) Tim Tebow&#8217;s autobiography, <em>&#8220;Through My Eyes,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0no one has\u00a0probably heard of Coach Craig Howard or Coach\u00a0Verlon\u00a0Dorminey.<\/p>\n<p>You see, Coach Dorminey\u00a0was the Head Coach of Jacksonville&#8217;s Trinity Christian Academy.\u00a0 After a young, 8th-grade\u00a0Tim Tebow\u00a0led Trinity&#8217;s JV football team to an undefeated season as their QUARTERBACK, it was Dorminey\u00a0who would tell Tebow\u00a0and his family that Tim should play, not quarterback, but rather linebacker, at Trinity.\u00a0 As only Homer Simpson could say,<strong><em>\u00a0&#8220;D&#8217;oh!&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In what Tim Tebow describes as <em>&#8220;position by stereotype,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Dorminey\u00a0was of the philosophy that Tebow&#8217;s\u00a0build &#8212; not withstanding the obvious facts of an undefeated JV season staring him in the face &#8212; suited him to play linebacker like his older brothers.\u00a0 I do not know the Tebows\u00a0personally, but I would venture to say that God has created each of the Tebow\u00a0boys differently.\u00a0 One should not make the mistake, as did Dorminey, to believe that Tim Tebow was gifted to play any position other than quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Craig Howard, Head Coach of Nease\u00a0High School, the public high school in St. John&#8217;s County, FL where Tim Tebow\u00a0would get the chance to start at quarterback, saw things differently than Coach Dorminey.\u00a0 Not only would\u00a0Tim Tebow\u00a0start at quarterback, but he would lead Nease\u00a0to a 4A\u00a0State Championship in his senior year, beating Armwood High School 44-37 in the state finals played at the Miami Dolphins&#8217; <del>Sun Life<\/del>\u00a0Joe Robbie Statium.\u00a0 Of couse, this stadium was the place where Tebow and the Florida Gators won a National Championship against the Sam Bradford-led Oklahoma Sooners and where he would lead the only Broncos&#8217; team to ever beat the Dolphins in Miami in a stunning come-from-behind overtime victory in his first start of the 2011 season.<\/p>\n<p>After a 4-1 start, Tim Tebow\u00a0looks to be the future quarterback of the Denver Broncos.\u00a0 However, John Elway, the former Broncos&#8217; great and now V.P of Football Operations for Denver, apparently can&#8217;t bring himself to &#8220;buy into&#8221; Tim Tebow\u00a0as the long-term solution to the franchise&#8217;s football woes at quarterback.\u00a0 Elway, who seems to give a lot more interviews than any other V.P. of Football Operations of any NFL franchise, had <a href=\"http:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2011\/11\/21\/elway-broncos-are-no-closer-to-finding-quarterback-of-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">the following exchange with a local Denver radio station on Monday<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAny closer to feeling if you have your quarterback on this team?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elway flatly answered \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think obviously [Tebow\u00a0is] making progress week in and week out. When you look at our third down numbers, those have to improve. I mean, that\u2019s the bottom line,\u201d Elway said. \u201cWe can\u2019t go 3-for-13 [on third downs] and win a world championship. Those are the type of things we have to keep improving.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Talk about a ringing endorsement of the Broncos&#8217; current starter.\u00a0 I&#8217;m\u00a0not sure\u00a0how Elway\u00a0could be more tepid in his support of Tim Tebow, although\u00a0the\u00a0pained expression on his face while gingerly clapping after Tebow&#8217;s\u00a0game-winning run against the Jets last Thursday might would rank up there.\u00a0 Did anyone &#8212; including the great John Elway &#8212;\u00a0honestly think that the Broncos could compete for a play-off spot this year, much less a world championship?<\/p>\n<p>Common sense (which seems to be in short supply in the Tebow\u00a0debate) would tell us that Super Bowl champions would need a better completion percentage than 3-for-13.\u00a0 However,\u00a0the\u00a0facts tell us teams that are in a rebuilding mode with a second-year quarterback named Tebow\u00a0and a young offensive line can and do win football games, even with low 3rd down completion percentages.\u00a0 But, why let facts get in the way of feelings.\u00a0 After all, we\u00a0are a feelings-oriented culture.<\/p>\n<p>I expect the <a title=\"Tim Tebow: Confounding His Critics One Game at a Time\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/11\/16\/tim-tebow-confounding-his-critics-one-game-at-a-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">Merril Hoge&#8217;s and\u00a0Cris Carter&#8217;s of the football world to continue to move the goalposts <\/a>on Tim Tebow.\u00a0 However, I do not expect the V.P. of Football Operations for the Denver Broncos to\u00a0keep changing the standards by which Tim Tebow\u00a0is judged.\u00a0 And, to\u00a0give such a pathetically lame answer to a question that he should have known was coming either shows that Elway\u00a0really does not want Tim Tebow as the quarterback of the future or he is not as good a front office man as he was a field general.\u00a0\u00a0Neither\u00a0one is an attractive option.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, I believe that Tim Tebow needs to improve his\u00a0skills as a professional quarterback.\u00a0 Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/7269318\/denver-broncos-tim-tebow-responds-john-elway-jake-plummer-remarks\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Tebow would tell you that as well<\/a>.\u00a0 But, why is Tim Tebow held to a different\u00a0standard than any other NFL quarterback with similar playing\/starting experience?\u00a0 At this point, <a title=\"Tim Tebow, Football &amp; Anti-Christian Bias\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/10\/21\/tim-tebow-football-anti-christian-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\">I think that the answer to that question is obvious<\/a>, but I&#8217;ll let the readers decide for themselves based on the facts that\u00a0are before us.<\/p>\n<p>Funny thing is, that the\u00a0football facts &#8212; the good, the bad, and the ugly &#8212; regarding one Tim Tebow\u00a0are right in front of us.\u00a0 Similar facts, albeit with a much younger\u00a0Tim Tebow, were before Coach\u00a0Dorminey\u00a0and Coach Howard.\u00a0 More refined facts were before Urban Meyer.\u00a0 Still more facts\u00a0&#8212; including a 4-1 starting record since he took over for the now\u00a0waived\u00a0Kyle Orton &#8212; are staring John Fox and John Elway in the face.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Tebow\u00a0is not your conventional, stereotypical quarterback.\u00a0 Never has been.\u00a0 Never will be.\u00a0 Craig Howard and Urban Meyer had the vision to see it.\u00a0 John Fox wants to.\u00a0 John Elway\u00a0may never see it.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s hoping that the two Johns don&#8217;t end up in the same sentence with Verlon\u00a0Dorminey, but instead end up alongside Howard and Meyer.<\/p>\n<p>I have my doubts about the two Johns, but not\u00a0about Tim Tebow.\u00a0 Those who don&#8217;t study his history are doomed to get run over at some point by the strong-willed young man who knew he was destined to be a quarterback since he was six.\u00a0 If we only could see through his eyes!\u00a0 Maybe somebody needs to get John Elway a certain book for Christmas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.
