{"id":5449,"date":"2014-11-15T11:35:25","date_gmt":"2014-11-15T18:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/?p=5449"},"modified":"2014-11-15T11:35:25","modified_gmt":"2014-11-15T18:35:25","slug":"national-cathedral-muslim-prayer-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/?p=5449","title":{"rendered":"The National Cathedral &#038; Muslim Prayer: A Church No More?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;Here is the church, here is the steeple. \u00a0Open up the door and here&#8217;s all the people.&#8221;<\/em> That childhood rhyme, illustrated with both hands, clearly encapsulates the Biblical principle that the church, at its heart, is about the people. \u00a0One might have a spectacular building, but without the people of God worshiping in that place, there simply is no church.<\/p>\n<p>So, it is a sad day indeed that\u00a0The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington &#8212; more familiarly known as The \u00a0Washington National Cathedral &#8212; cannot be, at least in the way that Saint Peter and Saint Paul would recognize &#8212; a Christian Church.<\/p>\n<p>Any place can call themselves a <em>&#8220;church,&#8221;<\/em> but unless that place is populated with people whose foundation is faith in Jesus Christ and Christ alone, then they cannot, at least according to Jesus&#8217; own words in Scripture, be considered one of His churches:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span class=\"text Matt-16-13\">&#8220;Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cWho do people say that the Son of Man is?\u201d<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-23686\" class=\"text Matt-16-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>And they said, \u201cSome say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.\u201d<\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-23687\" class=\"text Matt-16-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>He said to them, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cBut who do you say that I am?\u201d<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-23688\" class=\"text Matt-16-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>Simon Peter replied, \u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.\u201d<\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-23689\" class=\"text Matt-16-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>And Jesus answered him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cBlessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-ESV-23690\" class=\"text Matt-16-18\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock\u00a0I will build my church, and the gates of hell\u00a0shall not prevail against it.&#8221;\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(Matthew 16:13-18)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Church is built on Peter&#8217;s confession of faith (not Peter, himself) that Jesus IS the Christ &#8212; the Messiah &#8212; the Son of the Living God. \u00a0Any church, whether in the First Century or the 21st Century, must, of necessity, be built upon this same foundation of faith. \u00a0That The Washington National Cathedral (an Episcopal Church) would reject this foundation by their words and actions raises the question of whether or not they can be considered a true church.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Interfaith Alliance, Faith Shared &amp; Sinking Sand\" href=\"http:\/\/fromlaw2grace.com\/2011\/05\/24\/interfaith-alliance-faith-shared-sinking-sand\/\">While interfaith services (i.e., praying and worshiping other gods alongside the One, True God)<\/a> have already been held in The Washington National Cathedral, the use of this building for an exclusively Muslim Prayer Service indicates that this historic<em> &#8220;church&#8221;<\/em> has abandoned any pretense of being a Biblical, Christian church:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of the cathedral, spoke of Saint Benedict, who he said believed equally in the importance of prayer and hospitality. Marveling at the sounds of Arabic prayers, which he called \u201ca beautiful sacred language in a beautiful sacred space,\u201d Hall said he hoped the service would serve as the start of more efforts to work together for good.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/2014\/11\/14\/40c49d06-6c41-11e4-a31c-77759fc1eacc_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Washington Cathedral&#8217;s first Muslim prayer service interrupted by heckler&#8221;<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With all due respect to the Very Rev. Gary Hall, the Dean of the Cathedral, allowing non-Christians to use the Cathedral to offer prayers to a false god is not sacred. It is sacrilegious! \u00a0I&#8217;m quite sure that the Old Testament prophet Elijah would not have felt the same way about the prophets of Baal offering prayers in the Temple in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we have entered a day when many parts of Christendom have abandoned historic Biblical principles and replaced them with ecumenical <em>&#8220;feel-goodism.&#8221;<\/em> This Muslim prayer service inside what used to be a Christian church cannot be the<em> &#8220;start of more efforts to work together for good.&#8221;<\/em> Why? Because only God is good and His standards of good and evil, right and wrong have not changed.<\/p>\n<p>More change &#8212; most of it not good &#8212; is coming to the <em>&#8220;church&#8221;<\/em> in America. Somehow I think that God might be heckling those who turn aside from the truth to lies. For those, like The Washington National Cathedral, heckling might be the least of their problems.
