Well, only if the Boy Scouts want that well-known rock band,”Train,” to play at their Jamboree this summer. At least that’s the ultimatum that has been issued by the San Francisco-based band:
When we booked this show for the Boy Scouts of America we were not aware of any policy barring openly gay people from participation in the organization. Train strongly opposes any kind of policy that questions the equality of any American citizen. We have always seen the BSA as a great and noble organization. We look forward to participating in the Jamboree this summer, as long as they make the right decision before then.” (here)
I must admit that I have never really heard of “Train.” If they don’t sing Christian music (which I highly doubt) or Country music (also thinking a “no” on that one), then I am not surprised that I haven’t a clue as to the members of the band or their music.
However, I am surprised that anyone with half a brain — especially members of a band from SAN FRANCISCO — would be so clueless as to not know that the Boy Scouts of America prohibits openly gay people from serving in the organization (at least currently). Perhaps “Train’s” members — Pat Monahan, Jimmy Stafford, and Scott Underwood — or their booking agent don’t even have the requisite half a brain needed to attend or perform at a Scouts’ Jamboree.
Of course, what “Train’s” three members do have is the politically correct response to individuals or organizations — including civic and religious groups — who refuse to acknowledge homosexuality and same-sex marriage as morally right. That response — which is their right as well — is to refuse to perform at functions sponsored by these groups.
This itself should come as no surprise. The cultural winds of legitimizing homosexuality in general and same-sex marriage in particular are blowing as hard as the spring winds in New Mexico (pretty hard). With President Obama’s continuing (and completely predictable) “evolution” on same-sex marriage — coupled with the inevitable legislative and legal victories for same-sex marriage — the actions of “Train” will seem insignificant compared to what is coming.
Whether they realize it or not (I suspect they are not astute enough to), “Train” has staked out the position that will become the norm in our post-modern, post-Christian culture. What position is that? Simply this: if organizations — including churches — don’t “make the right decision” on same-sex marriage and homosexuality, then they can expect to be shunned, ridiculed, persecuted, and eventually punished for their failure to conform to the evolving standards of morality. WHEN that happens — especially for Christians — we will be blessed. At least that’s what Jesus said. And, that’s infinitely better than a “Train” concert!
Howell, do you really expect a rock group to have a half-a-brain between them?
Glad you’re back in the internet world.
Doug,
You are right in pointing out my unrealistic expectations about rock bands and brains 🙂 I did find it amusing that a San Francisco-area band would have no clue about the Boy Scouts’ policy on gay leaders. Whoever booked the band (and I assume is is not the members of Train themselves) had some ‘splainin to do. Glad to be back on the blog. Thanks for stopping by. Hope all is well with you. God bless and have a great day. Off to the State Evangelism Conference session this morning.
