Shock: Bill Clinton Now Supports Gay Marriage!

Bill Clinton, America’s 42nd President, has become the moral conscience of the modern-day Democrat Party in America. That should, in and of itself, speak volumes as to what this once great party has become, but I digress. On support for abortion-on-demand to gay marriage and from an ambiguous (at best) support for Israel to apparent support of Drones killing American citizens on American soil without due process, Democrats are certainly not the party of my parents or grandparents. I suppose some would say, “good,” while many would lament the moral shift our country has taken since Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law in 1996. Come to think about it, there were other moral shifts involving President Clinton during that same time frame.

One should not be surprised at Bill Clinton’s change of heart. We should perhaps be more surprised that it took him this long to change positions. Of course, as a Baptist (formerly Southern Baptist), President Clinton did (and I presume still does) have a working knowledge of the Bible. You could always tell that he came from an Evangelical background because of the big Bible that he carried with him to church. I always loved that he carried the Word, even though it seemed that he might not always grasp the Bible’s relevance to his life and practice. Well, that could be said of most of us — pastors included — at one time or another, but that’s a post for another day.

In backtracking on DOMA, President Clinton said:

When I signed the bill, I included a statement with the admonition that “enactment of this legislation should not, despite the fierce and at times divisive rhetoric surrounding it, be understood to provide an excuse for discrimination.” Reading those words today, I know now that, even worse than providing an excuse for discrimination, the law is itself discriminatory. It should be overturned.

Just like his previous positions on abortion (he, along with other Southern Baptists Al Gore and Richard Gephardt, were pro-life until it was no longer politically expedient to hold that view in the modern Democrat Party), President Clinton, much like President Obama, has evolved on the issue of gay marriage. While I do not believe that the current President has evolved nearly as much, since he has probably supported same-sex marriage for longer than he has publicly admitted, Bill Clinton has had to “evolve” on this issue because he wants to remain a moral authority within the Democrat Party. For modern-day Democrats, there simply is no other moral option but to wholeheartedly support abortion and gay rights, including same-sex marriage.

Once DOMA is overturned — and I believe that it will be — Bill Clinton, in his mea culpa for signing DOMA, alerts us as to the coming war that will be waged against churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious organizations who continue to support the Biblical and Traditional definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. Homosexual rights, including the right to marry, will be afforded the same protection as race and gender. Clinton, in setting the stage for the assault on religious organizations’ tax exempt statuses (which is the next step), likens opposition to gay marriage with opposition to a woman’s right to vote:

We have yet to celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment, but a society that denied women the vote would seem to us now not unusual or old-fashioned but alien. I believe that in 2013 DOMA and opposition to marriage equality are vestiges of just such an unfamiliar society.

While not as direct, Clinton uses an Abraham Lincoln quote from the Civil War-era that implies opposition to slavery and support for gay marriage are “core values” that our laws (did) and will eventually recognize as right. When branded — either directly or indirectly as sexist or racist or homophobic — the discussion often comes to an abrupt end. When threatened with the loss of their tax exempt status, not to mention their standing in the community, many (perhaps most) religious organizations will fall into line by accepting the legitimacy — both moral and legal — of homosexuality.

But, before we end, I’ll remind my readers of an eternal truth — a truth written in the big Bible that Bill Clinton often carried while President and perhaps still has in his possession. It’s a truth that is as old as the beginning of creation and it is a truth which was affirmed by none other than Jesus Christ in the New Testament (we don’t even need to resort to Leviticus). It is a truth that the U.S. Supreme Court, Congress, Bill Clinton or Barack Obama cannot change, no matter what the prevailing winds of culture might dictate. It is a truth which must be proclaimed in love, even when that truth is not well-received by others or when proclaiming that truth will result in scorn and/or punishment. What is that truth? That marriage has been and always will be an institution created by God and He does not change:

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” He (Jesus) answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Gospel of Matthew 19:3-6)
